Ok, so my mom says my new-found love for a clean house serves me right for all the times I left hers trashed.
I say I like things neat.
Steven says I go on "cleaning binges and purges." His has such a negative connotation, don'tcha think? :P Unfortunately, his may be the most accurate. I may be mostly fine with the way the house looks for two or three days, then decide to take out the trash.
And sweep.
And mop.
And do all the dishes.
Plus the laundry.
Plus clean out an extra room.
Plus the deep clean the bathroom.
Plus...
You get the picture. And, on the surface, that seems like a really good thing. A GREAT thing even. But...really, it just stresses me out. Hardcore. I get wound-up, obsessive.
Today was one of those days. I had to be at work by 2:30, but once I got started, I just couldn't stop. And, it wasn't enough that I was in that mood--I didn't care if Steven HELPED or not...as long as he wasn't playing a video game. So, I told him I felt taken advantage of while he played and I worked(cheap shot, I know...especially to this man who does so much for me. He promised to always keep flowers in the house, just because I mentioned how much I love them.) So, he stopped. Just like that. Turned off the game and grabbed some clothes I was folding to help.
Instead of thanking him and being appreciative--I unfolded what he folded and told him I'd need to redo them, because the edges were crooked. To be fair--I'm a little OCD...It really would have driven me nuts to see the corners hanging out everywhere. But, I could have said that SOOO many other ways.
He teased me about it a little, but, really mostly left it alone. Until I was in the shower, and called for him to grab me the soft scrub so I could clean it while I was in there. He refused, partly because I didn't have time, partly because I'm allergic to bleach and he prefers me to not clean it while I'm in it. Irritated, I told him I'd just get it myself. Naturally, that went over well.
Before I knew it, we were in a full-blown argument, and he was telling me how angry it made him that I blamed him for not helping clean, when the times he did clean--things weren't good enough! I kept mostly calm through the whole thing--just mostly enough to cop a smart-ass attitude anyway.
He grabbed for the spoon, and I got one stinging splat before he gave me another chance to talk it out. He told me I was getting spanked, and I was absolutely indignant. WHY ON EARTH should I get spanked for KEEPING THE HOUSE CLEAN, after all?
Yeah, so TOTALLY not the point, but that IS where I went with it. He explained again, for the millionth time, that it wasn't what I was doing, it was my attitude during the doing. This was about the time the "cleaning binges and purges" comment came to bear.
With a big ol' spoon-print on my butt, I was willing to be much more respectful. So, when he asked me, "Seriously, Grace...do you not think you over-reacted this morning?", I responded, "No, I maybe handled things too rough, but I really do get upset about the cleaning thing. I have so much else going on that I can't control, with bills and work and money and school, and changing majors and all that, the one thing I CAN do something about is how we live. I don't want the house trashed all the time. I don't think it was a 'cleaning binge'. I think it was just me trying to get a handle on SOMETHING."
And, ya know what? That made sense to him. Instead of a spanking, I got a hug. Now, I'd love to say that I took the whole thing in stride at that point. But, I didn't. My attitude soured. I felt...slighted? almost? I'm not sure...but still a little indignant that the whole situation had even taken place, frustrated because I felt off-balance---
And, worse yet! The shower still didn't get clean. So, I got quiet. I didn't talk much on the drive to pick up my car(it had a flat yesterday, so I left it at my other job.) He could have pushed.
He didn't. Instead, he went and put air in my tire while I was at work, and gas in my tank. Then, he came and dropped off my keys.
At first, I felt like I'd won. I didn't get spanked, I got my way--what else can a girl ask for?
YEah...I think that picture covers that nicely. Because, after considering it, I realized how right he really was. He does so much for me. It was ridiculous to freak out over a sheet folded a way I didn't like. It was dumb to shut down about all of it. And, I didn't win--he made the decision to not spank because it was a situation that legitimately bothered me. I didn't bullshit an answer to get out of something. I opened up about feeling stressed out, and he let me go with that and a warning.
And, I'm so glad.
He let me think through things on my own and remember(AGAIN, I know) that we're on the same side. Like he always says..."I'm not out to get you here!"
And in doing all of that--he definitely won.
Gotta love that man.
